Overview

BabyAlpha Dev-Q is an open-source quadruped robot from WEILAN in China, aimed squarely at developers. At around 0.31 metres tall and 7 kg, it is a compact, accessible platform that gives researchers and educators a hands-on base for building and customising robotic applications.

The WEILAN BabyAlpha Dev-Q uses high-performance joint motors optimised for dynamic, efficient quadrupedal locomotion, and includes position encoders, an IMU and available interfaces for custom sensor integration, allowing access to environmental perception sensors depending on configuration. Its open-source control and perception software stack supports ROS and exposes APIs for motion control and sensor integration, with roughly 120 minutes of runtime. That openness lets teams reprogram behaviours from the ground up and add the sensing their projects require.

WEILAN targets research and education, where the Dev-Q serves as a development and teaching platform for locomotion algorithms, perception experiments and robotics coursework. Its modular, developer-friendly design makes this quadruped robot a practical entry point for labs and classrooms building custom autonomy, gait controllers and vision pipelines without starting from bare hardware.

Nexon System deploys BabyAlpha Dev-Q across Southeast Asia, providing commissioning, algorithm and task programming support, sensor integration, and developer or instructor training with ongoing support. We help teams stand up the ROS environment, integrate additional sensors and turn research prototypes into repeatable demonstrations or field tasks. Talk to Nexon to plan a BabyAlpha Dev-Q deployment for your programme.
