BRUCE is a 0.7 m, 4.8 kg kid-size humanoid from Westwood Robotics of the USA, created as an open, affordable platform for studying dynamic bipedal locomotion. Its small, light frame makes advanced legged-robot research accessible to labs and classrooms that could not justify a large, expensive machine.
The robot has 16 degrees of freedom and uses Koala BEAR liquid-cooled actuators, particularly in the knees, to deliver high burst torque of 8 Nm with efficient thermal management for dynamic performance. Sensing comes from four contact sensors for ground and object interaction plus a 6-DOF inertial measurement unit sampling at 2 kHz for balance and motion. Its open-source control software supports mainstream deep-learning frameworks and Model Predictive Control algorithms for agile walking, giving researchers full visibility into the control stack.
As a research and teaching humanoid robot, BRUCE is well suited to university and corporate research on locomotion and control, and to advanced education where students implement and test their own gait and balance algorithms on real hardware.
