MAX is a multimodal four-legged robot from Tencent Robotics X in China. Weighing around 14 kg, it is a compact, agile platform that fuses legged and wheeled mobility, giving it both the rough-terrain capability of legs and the speed and efficiency of wheels.
The Tencent MAX integrates wheels directly onto its leg joints, with three electric actuators per leg for precise joint control, allowing it to switch smoothly between rolling and walking. Forward-facing cameras provide visual perception, joint torque sensors detect touchdown, and terrain recognition sensors enable centimetre-level accuracy. Its closed-source software uses proprietary model-predictive control combining offline and online planning, autonomous learning modules for gait adaptation and real-time dynamic control, giving it notable agility across changing surfaces.
Tencent targets security patrols, search and rescue, inspections and surveillance, where the leg-wheel hybrid lets MAX cover ground quickly on flat surfaces and then negotiate stairs, debris and obstacles during patrol and rescue missions. Its dynamic agility makes this quadruped robot well suited to unpredictable environments where a fixed wheeled or purely legged robot would be limited.
