Punyo is a research humanoid from the Toyota Research Institute in Japan, built around the idea of soft, whole-body manipulation and safe contact with people. As a compliance-focused humanoid robot, it explores how machines can grasp, hug and carry awkward objects the way humans instinctively do.
It perceives its surroundings with RGB-D cameras, LIDAR, force/torque sensors and proximity sensors for environment mapping and safe interaction. Compliant electric actuators paired with torque sensors let it manipulate objects and engage with humans precisely and gently. Its closed software stack covers AI-based task learning and control, navigation and mapping, human-robot interaction frameworks, and remote monitoring and updates.
That soft, safe approach makes it valuable for manufacturing research, healthcare and hospitality studies, and broader work on dexterous, contact-rich manipulation. By embracing whole-body contact rather than avoiding it, the platform opens new research into handling bulky, deformable or delicate items alongside people.
Nexon System supports the Toyota Punyo platform for research groups across Southeast Asia, providing commissioning, task-learning and behavior programming, and integration with your research, monitoring and data systems. We add training and reliable support so your team can focus on the science rather than the setup. Talk to Nexon to plan a manipulation research pilot.
