Qrio is a 0.58 m, 6.5 kg humanoid from Sony of Japan, a landmark entertainment robot first shown in 2003 that could walk, run, dance and interact socially. Its compact, expressive body remains a notable reference in humanoid robotics history and a memorable showpiece for exhibitions.
The robot has 38 degrees of freedom driven by 38 motors, distributed as 4 DOF in the head, 2 in the trunk, 5 in each arm, 5 in each set of fingers and 6 in each leg. It senses the world through two CCD cameras for stereoscopic vision and face recognition, seven microphones for voice recognition and sound localisation, and three-axis and two-axis accelerometers for balance. Its software runs Sony's Aperios real-time operating system with the OPEN-R platform for motion and interaction control, plus speech recognition and synthesis for two-way conversation.
