Surena 4 is a full-size research humanoid from the University of Tehran for education, research and entertainment, deployed and integrated across Southeast Asia by Nexon System.
Last updated: 08 Jun 2025
Surena 4 is a 1.7 m, 68 kg humanoid developed by the University of Tehran in Iran, a full-size research platform capable of walking, manipulating objects and interacting through speech. It represents a significant academic effort in advanced humanoid robotics and serves as both a research tool and a public demonstrator.
The robot has 43 degrees of freedom powered by custom-designed actuators with precise torque control, optimised for lightweight and efficient operation. It perceives its surroundings using cameras for face and object detection, microphones for speech recognition, force sensors for manipulation control, and inertial measurement units for balance and stable walking. Its software runs on the Robot Operating System (ROS) with an FPGA-based real-time control system and AI modules for speech, vision and action imitation, giving researchers a capable and well-structured platform to extend.
As a research and teaching humanoid robot, Surena 4 suits education, academic research into locomotion, manipulation and human-robot interaction, and entertainment demonstrations that showcase its walking and speech abilities. Its full-size body makes it an effective ambassador for robotics programmes.
Nexon System supports the Surena 4 humanoid for universities and research groups across Southeast Asia, providing commissioning, ROS-based onboarding, task and demonstration programming, and integration with existing research and teaching infrastructure. Each engagement includes training and ongoing support. Talk to Nexon to plan a research or education deployment.
